Nurses Week 2013--May 6-12

Nurses Week 2013

The theme celebrating Nurses Week 2013 emphasizes that nurses deliver quality and innovation in patient care.

Thursday, May 2, 2013

Innovation in nursing utilizes care and system processes, technologies, and evidence-best practices to improve patient outcomes and overall patient satisfaction. Innovation in nursing is a way to increase productivity, reduce stress, and improve nurse retention. This contributes to improved patient care. Today, innovation is driven by using technology and creative care processes in patient care. Nurses continuously use the information, imagination, and initiative to encourage innovation.

Quality: Often described as an art and a science, nursing is a profession that embraces dedicated people with varied interests, strengths and passions because of the many opportunities the profession offers. As nurses, we work in many areas of practice. We have many roles – from staff nurse to educator to nurse practitioner and nurse researcher – and serve all of them with passion for the profession and with a strong commitment to patient safety. With the many roles nurses practice, the nurses at the Portland VA Medical Center are on the frontlines leading the efforts for innovation and using new technologies for our nation’s Veterans.

Background: National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

PVAMC Nurses: In the Portland VA Medical Center, our Community Based Outpatient Clinics, and our home health staff we have 741 Registered Nurses, 65 Nurse Practitioners, 11 Clinical Nurse Specialists, 7 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, 4 Clinical Nurse Leaders, 148 Licensed Practical Nurses and 120 Nursing Assistants.  Nursing continues to grow at the Portland VA Medical Center adding over 100 Registered Nurses, 4 Nurse Practitioners, 26 Licensed Practical Nurses, and 10 Nursing Assistants in the past year.

PVAMC also recognizes our Nurses annually with the VA Secretary’s Awards in Nursing Excellence. We recognize our nurses within the following four categories, RN in an expanded nurse role, RN in a staff nurse role, Licensed Practical Nurse and the Nursing Assistant role.  The recipients of this award have been nominated by their peers for their active engagement in the care of Veterans that are patient driven and demonstrate excellence.  Patient driven isn’t a buzzword, it compels the health care team to view individualized care needs through the eyes of the patient.  Actually, the patient is a leader and negotiating partner in a coordinated, interdisciplinary shared decision-making process with the health care team. Demonstrating excellence in nursing is more than knowing what to do in given situations, it’s going above and beyond. Winners for this year’s award will be announced during Nurses’ Week 2013.
