VA Portland Health Care System
Cancer Survivor Day 2021
VA Portland provides world class comprehensive cancer care services for hundreds of Veterans every year. Whether Veterans have a new cancer diagnosis or have been dealing with cancer for a long time, VA Portland is here to provide timely, compassionate, and state-of-the-art care.
Embedded in VA’s cancer care team’s philosophy of providing Veteran-centered service and honoring/supporting our nations heroes, VA Portland has hosted an annual National Cancer Survivor Day event since 1997.
For twenty-four years this event has celebrated our Veterans’ lives after cancer. Cancer survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, family members, and friends come together for those living with a history of cancer and bring attention to the ongoing challenges they continue to endure. The event’s focus is on health care programs, treatment, research advances, resources, and improvement for cancer survivors’ quality of life. The doctors, nurses, staff, caregivers and, above all, VA Portland’s cancer survivors are celebrated.
VA Portland’s Cancer Survivor Committee is the event’s organizing body. It includes facility staff members who, year after year, volunteer to assist preparing this annual endeavor. The event is widely popular drawing 100-150 participants per year. Keynote speakers include cancer researchers who share the latest on efforts battling cancer, cancer care specialists, support organizations such as the American Cancer Society, and others who have spoken on a variety of cancer topics. The committee members are passionate and dedicated to this event, many for several years. Some members have endured cancer in their own lives personally or through their family or friends.
The event has typically been held in the medical center auditorium with displays, speakers, meal and food items, t-shirts, gift items for those that have attended. VA Voluntary Services and the local union have been vital for this event’s existence. Last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID 19. This year’s event will be virtual and the first one in this manner.
