VA Portland Health Care System
Snow? Have an appointment at the VA?
Inclement weather? Worried about getting to your VA appointment?
It is that time of year in the Pacific Northwest when you never know what the weather will bring.
If bad weather does hit, the roads are bad, and you have an appointment at the VA, what can you expect and what can you do?
What to expect from the VA?
The Portland VA Medical Center emergency department and inpatient services as well as the Vancouver VA campus inpatient services operate 24/7 regardless of weather or road conditions. Out-patient services at any of the VAPORHCS 12 sites of care could, however, potentially be impacted by bad weather.
Snow and ice on the roads obviously impact travel safety for staff and Veterans alike so VAPORHCS leadership looks very carefully at our operations when inclement weather happens.
When a decision is made regarding delaying opening or closing of any VAPORHCS facilities or services due to weather, we do our best to provide as much notification as possible. We have four primary means in notifying patients;
- VAPORHCS staff will do their best to try and call Veterans who have scheduled appointments to see about rescheduling their appointment or possibly accommodating them based on their needs and availability of clinical staff.
- The VAPORHCS Alert Line will be updated providing up-to-date information on the operating status of the VAPORHCS' 12 sites of care. Anyone can call 24/7 for a recorded message at (503) 721-1458 or (503) 220-8262 ext. 51458, Outside Portland Area (800) 949-1004 ext. 51458. The message is updated as changes occur.
- VAPORHCS social media platforms will be updated/shared via Facebook facebook.com/vaportland and on Twitter www.twitter.com/vaportland.
- An “Alert” will be sent out to subscribers and posted at the top of the main page of the VAPORHCS website. If you would like to receive automated updates via email, please sign up with your email address on the main VAPORHCS web page under "CONNECT WITH VA PORTLAND HEALTH CARE SYSTEM."
