Magnet Designation - Portland VA Medical Center

“The designation is a testimony to our skilled, innovative, and caring staff who continually strive to improve care they provide to our nation’s heroes. I am grateful for our nursing staff and proud of their accomplishments,”

Kathleen Chapman MSN, RN,NEA-BC, FACHE PVAMC Deputy Director

The Portland VA Medical Center announced its re-designation as a Magnet Facility, Dec. 15, 2010. Portland VA Medical Center was granted Magnet status originally on May 15, 2006 by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Magnet recognition formally acknowledges that Portland VA Medical Center is a medical center distinguished at an international level for providing superior patient care. As a Magnet facility, Portland VA Medical Center retains and recruits the “best of the best” nursing staff which partners with the multi-disciplinary healthcare team to establish an organizational environment of outstanding patient care, shared leadership, evidenced based practice, innovation and professionalism.

Portland VA Medical Center is one of four medical centers in Oregon, and
one of five VA Medical Centers nationally to be a granted Magnet status.

Here at the Portland VA Medical Center, we are always striving for best practice. Magnet has recognized that PVAMC has established organizational structures that allow for continual re-evaluation of our patient-driven healthcare delivery and work condition processes. Professional development opportunity that is supported both at the individual and medical center-wide level is a commitment from our leadership that “sets the bar” at new heights of healthcare excellence.

Working in a Magnet facility is about being able to practice in a transformational leadership environment that encourages decisions based on one’s own expertise and professional judgment. Nurses at all levels experience support in achieving control over one’s practice, promoting evidence-based changes to improve patient care, and empowering staff to be involved in decisions that affect one’s working conditions.

"Recognizing quality patient care and nursing excellence, the Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care they can expect to receive."
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations

In order to maintain our Magnet designation, Portland VA Medical Center is driven to closely examine every aspect of our nursing systems. This leads us to identify those processes that exemplify nursing excellence and to improve those gaps that may need further development. This in turn helps Portland VA Medical Center to firmly establish a positive environment of patient safety and continuous evidenced-based improvement in patient care.
